Experiencing an Olfactory Sculpture
The fragrances of different flowers and plants, and their cultural significance to people around the world, inspired a Marymount parent to create an interactive olfactory work of art, which she discussed and demonstrated at a Middle School assembly on February 25.
The artist, Mrs. Gayil Nalls, has researched the uses of herbs, spices, fruits and other natural substances in countless countries, documenting their various uses in ceremonial, medical, folkloric and other contexts. Her interactive sculpure is intended to evoke feelings, emotions and memories. At the event, students experienced many of these powerfully suggestive fragrances.
